Family Traditions We Started This Year (and Love)

Illustration of a family enjoying a picnic and spending time together creating new family traditions

Sometimes, the best family memories are born not from big events, but from simple, intentional moments that become traditions. This year, our family started a few new ones, some planned, some accidental, and they’ve already become things we look forward to. Whether you're looking to start your own or just want inspiration, here are a few of our favourite new traditions that brought us closer, sparked joy, and made everyday life feel a little more special.

Sunday Story Night

Every Sunday evening, we gather in the living room with snacks and blankets for a family read-aloud. We take turns choosing the book, from magical adventures to silly picture books and sometimes act out scenes or give characters funny voices.

Why We Love It:
It calms the Sunday scares, builds connection, and encourages a love of reading in a no-pressure way.

Breakfast-for-Dinner Fridays

What started as a lazy dinner hack turned into something the kids now cheer for. Pancakes, eggs, smoothies, and sometimes even breakfast "tacos", it’s easy to prepare and feels like a treat.

Bonus:
It’s affordable and a great way to get the kids involved in the kitchen.

Backyard Saturdays

Unless the weather is wild, Saturday mornings are reserved for backyard time. No screens, no chores, just games, gardening, or hanging out in the hammock. Sometimes we invite neighbours, sometimes it’s just us.

Why It Stuck:
It gives us a break from the rush and helps us enjoy the simple pleasure of being outside together.

Bake & Share Days

Once a month, we pick a recipe, bake something as a family, and then deliver half to someone else, a neighbour, teacher, or friend. It’s become a sweet way to spread joy and teach kindness.

Favourite So Far:
Chocolate chip banana bread with a handwritten note from the kids.

Seasonal Movie Nights

Each new season kicks off with a themed movie night, popcorn, decorations, and all. Think cosy fall films in October, a winter holiday classic in December, a spring favourite in March, and a summer backyard projector night in June.

Why We Keep Doing It:
It creates a rhythm through the year and gives us something to look forward to together.

“Big Feelings” Jar

This one surprised us. We added a small jar in the kitchen with slips of paper and crayons nearby. Anytime someone’s feeling overwhelmed, upset, or just needs a moment, they write or draw what’s going on and put it in the jar. Later, we talk about it together when everyone’s ready.

What It Taught Us:
Sometimes it’s easier for kids (and adults) to express things with space and support. This helped us become better communicators.

Not every tradition has to be perfect or permanent. Some might fizzle out, and that’s okay. But the ones that stick, the ones your family connects with, can become anchors during busy seasons and reminders of what really matters.
