How to Clean Your Filter Coffee Machine

How to Clean Your Filter Coffee Machine

A filter coffee machine is one of the easiest ways to enjoy fresh coffee at home, but regular cleaning is essential if you want every cup to taste its best. Over time, coffee oils, mineral deposits, and leftover grounds can build up inside your machine, affecting flavour, performance, and hygiene.

The good news is that cleaning a filter coffee machine is simple. With a few basic steps and regular maintenance, you can keep your coffee maker working efficiently and your morning brew tasting fresh.

Why Cleaning Your Filter Coffee Machine Matters

Every time you brew coffee, natural oils from the coffee grounds pass through the machine. These oils can cling to the filter basket, carafe, and internal parts, leaving behind residue that may create a bitter or stale taste.

Limescale can also build up inside the water tank and heating system, especially if you live in a hard water area. This can slow down brewing, reduce water flow, and make your machine less efficient.

Regular cleaning helps to:

  • Improve the flavour of your coffee
  • Remove coffee oils and residue
  • Reduce limescale build-up
  • Keep the machine hygienic
  • Extend the life of your filter coffee machine

How Often Should You Clean a Filter Coffee Machine?

For best results, rinse removable parts after every use and give your machine a deeper clean regularly.

As a general guide:

  • After every use: Empty the filter basket, dispose of used coffee grounds, and rinse the carafe.
  • Weekly: Wash the carafe, filter basket, lid, and removable parts with warm soapy water.
  • Monthly: Descale the machine to remove mineral deposits and limescale.
  • More often: Clean more frequently if you use your coffee machine every day or live in a hard water area.

Always check the manufacturer’s instructions for your specific model before using any cleaning or descaling solution.

What You Need to Clean a Filter Coffee Machine

Before you start, gather a few simple cleaning supplies:

Avoid using abrasive scourers or harsh chemicals, as these may damage the machine or leave behind unwanted residue.

Step 1: Unplug the Coffee Machine

Before cleaning, switch off and unplug your filter coffee machine. Allow it to cool completely if it has recently been used.

This is especially important when cleaning around the warming plate or any electrical components.

Step 2: Remove Used Coffee Grounds

Take out the used paper filter or empty the reusable filter. Dispose of the coffee grounds and rinse the filter basket to remove any loose residue.

If your machine uses a permanent filter, wash it carefully with warm soapy water. Coffee oils can build up in the mesh, so make sure it is fully rinsed and free from residue before using it again.

Step 3: Wash the Carafe and Removable Parts

Remove the carafe, filter basket, lid, and any detachable parts. Wash them in warm soapy water using a soft sponge or cloth.

Pay attention to areas where coffee stains and oils can collect, such as the spout, lid, and bottom of the carafe. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a clean tea towel.

Some removable parts may be dishwasher-safe, but always check your user manual first.

Step 4: Wipe the Outside of the Machine

Use a damp cloth to wipe the exterior of the coffee machine. Clean around the buttons, handle, warming plate, and water tank opening.

If coffee has spilled onto the warming plate, wipe it away gently once the plate is completely cool. Avoid pouring water directly onto the machine, as this can damage electrical parts.

Step 5: Descale the Filter Coffee Machine

Descaling removes limescale and mineral deposits from inside the machine. This is one of the most important steps for keeping your filter coffee machine working properly.

You can use a coffee machine descaler or, if suitable for your model, a white vinegar solution.

Using White Vinegar

  1. Fill the water tank with equal parts white vinegar and water.
  2. Place the empty carafe on the warming plate.
  3. Start a normal brewing cycle.
  4. Halfway through the cycle, switch off the machine and leave it to sit for around 30 minutes.
  5. Turn the machine back on and allow the cycle to finish.
  6. Empty the carafe and rinse it well.

Using a Coffee Machine Descaler

If using a descaling solution, follow the instructions on the product packaging and your coffee machine manual. Different machines and descalers may require different dilution levels or cycle times.

Step 6: Run Fresh Water Cycles

After descaling, it is important to rinse the machine thoroughly.

Fill the water tank with fresh clean water and run a full brewing cycle without coffee. Empty the carafe, then repeat this process at least two more times.

This helps remove any vinegar smell, descaling solution, or loosened mineral deposits from inside the machine.

Step 7: Dry and Reassemble

Once all parts are clean and fully rinsed, allow them to air dry or dry them with a clean tea towel.

Reassemble the filter basket, lid, carafe, and any other removable parts. Your filter coffee machine is now ready to use again.

How to Keep Your Filter Coffee Machine Cleaner for Longer

A few simple habits can help keep your machine cleaner between deep cleans.

Empty used coffee grounds as soon as possible after brewing. Leaving damp grounds in the basket can encourage odours and residue build-up.

Rinse the carafe and filter basket after each use, especially if coffee has been sitting for a while. If your machine has a reusable filter, wash it regularly to prevent coffee oils from affecting the taste of your brew.

Use filtered water if you live in a hard water area. This can help reduce limescale build-up and may improve the taste of your coffee.

Leave the lid open after cleaning so the water tank and basket can dry properly. This helps reduce trapped moisture and unwanted smells.
